"During the presentation of the 'Pakhuizen' project on the Oostelijke Handelskade in Amsterdam, the architect Felix Claus was asked why his design for an apartment block didn't look like an apartment block. 'Because,' he replied, 'I designed a squatted office building.' Around the same time I showed a client around the new building for the Rotterdam Polytechnic and remarked that we had actually made a converted warehouse. This fact inspired the man to commission us to design a building in the form of a spatial - architectonic sculpture, the programme of which could be determined at a later stage.

Anualment, des de 1998, la seu de Long Island City del MoMA (el PS1), convoca un concurs entre joves arquitectes per a donar forma a una instal·lació temporal que permeti celebrar activitats a l'exterior (Young Architects Program).
Es tracta d'estructures efímeres que donen una atmosfera particular, cada any diferent, als patis tancats per murs de formigó i que conviden a un ús més relaxat dels espais, als concerts i les recepcions.
És interessant perdre una estona amb el llistat històric dels projectes finalistes i guanyadors d'altres anys per a veure la capacitat de transformació que poden exercir sobre un mateix espai i la permeabilitat que han de demostrar amb els diversos esdeveniments que hi tenen lloc durant la temporada. Com a mostra, la proposta guanyadora de l'any 2011.

Se trata de estructuras efímeras que dan una atmósfera particular, cada año distinta, a los patios cerrados por muros de hormigón y que invitan a un uso más relajado de los espacios, a los conciertos y las recepciones.
Es interesante perder un rato con el listado histórico de los proyectos finalistas y ganadores de otros años para ver la capacidad de transformación que pueden ejercer sobre un mismo espacio y la permeabilidad que deben demostrar con los diversos acontecimientos que tienen lugar durante la temporada. Como muestra, la propuesta ganadora del año 2011.

Holding Pattern by Interboro Partners

June 19, 2011—September 19, 2011. "The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 announce Interboro Partners of Brooklyn, NY, as the winner of the 12th annual Young Architects Program in New York.

Interboro Partners' Holding Pattern brings an eclectic collection of objects including benches, mirrors, ping-pong tables, and floodlights, all disposed under a very elegant and taut canopy of rope strung from MoMA PS1's wall to the parapet across the courtyard. Creating an unobstructed space, the design incorporates for the first time the entire space of MoMA PS1's courtyard under a single grand structure, while creating an environment focusing on the audience as much as the Warm Up performance. A key component of the theme is recycling; objects in the space will be donated to the community at the conclusion of the summer. The designers met with local businesses and organizations including a taxi cab company, senior and day care centers, high schools, settlement houses, the local YMCA, library, and a greenmarket to determine what components of their installation could be used by those organizations following the Warm Up summer music series. Incorporating objects that can subsequently be used by these organizations is a means of strengthening MoMA PS1's ties to the local Long Island City community."

els nous encants, barcelona

La_Vanguardia, Barcelona | 29/08/2012. [...] "El proyecto firmado por el equipo de arquitectos B720 prevé un edificio completamente abierto. Sin muros, ventanas y que distribuye los puestos de venta a lo largo de una rampa con un desnivel del 6% que intenta simular una calle peatonal por la que el comprador podrá pasear al aire libre y que a su vez aprovecha el desnivel del terreno. El nuevo mercado tendrá capacidad para unos 479 puestos que se distribuirán en la rampa y entorno a una gran plaza donde se situará el espacio destinado a las subastas. Esta zona se encuentra a pie de calle junto las oficinas, los restaurantes y una sala polivalente. Con todo, el edificio tendrá un cerramiento perimetral para dotarlo de seguridad los días en los que el mercado cierra.

Por encima y coronando esta singular estructura, la enorme cubierta, que en su parte exterior es de aluminio y zinc, mientras que su interior es de acero inoxidable. Está organizada en bandas de ancho variables y a diferentes niveles con múltiples planos quebrados. De manera soterrada ya se ha construido el aparcamiento para 300 vehículos y la zona de carga y descarga.

La construcción del nuevo mercado han supuesto un inversión de 47 millones de euros y largos años de conversaciones entre los comerciantes y los responsables municipales. A pesar de estas mejoras, muchos comerciantes temen que el traslado a unas instalaciones más modernas comporten una pérdida de identidad de la antigua feria y temen también que bajo la cubierta singular haga calor en verano."

dimarts dia 16 d'octubre el taller visita tres mercats de Barcelona, juntament amb la Unidad Docente Berriochoa de l'ETSAM.

mercat de Sant Josep, la Boqueria (1836), reformat el 2000 per Lluís Clotet i Ignacio Paricio.

mercat de Santa Caterina (1848), el primer mercat cobert de la ciutat, reformat el 1999-2005 per Enric Miralles i Benedetta Tagliabue.

conjunt d'equipaments del Fort Pienc, obra de Josep Llinàs (2001-2003). suposa un canvi en el plantejament dels equipaments a la ciutat, apostant per la concentració d'activitats com a potencial creador de massa crítica per a sustentar un espai públic de referència.

"Ciutat Vella, unlike other quarters of Barcelona, is a city in itself. This city within a city seems to be the main feature of historical centers starting from this point everything gets complicated. 

The present planning [for the district] is unable to manage the complexity of the situation and looking for short-term results, has unbearably limited the rules of the game.

To repeat. To make it again. The project must not exist in a particular moment in time, but in inhabiting it.

Our project starts by criticizing the actual planning and proposes a model that allows for adaptation to the area's complexity.

Planning rules which contemplate something more than the street width and the building height.

A first scheme which allows for the development of the city complexity and which complies with the commitments undertaken.

We propose a model in which it is not so easy to distinguish between rehabilitation and new construction.

Where the squares, the constant drawing of widenings overflying the street as the only urban mechanism.

The shopping points decrease, rationalizing the access and services systems.

Creating public space, and residential density.

We move the shopping area to Avinguda Cambó, reducing its section, opening the old Market construction to the heart of Santa Caterina quarter."

Storefront for Art and Architecture is a nonprofit organization committed to the advancement of innovative positions in architecture, art and design. The program of exhibitions, artists talks, film screenings, conferences and publications is intended to generate dialogue and collaboration across geographic, ideological and disciplinary boundaries. As a public forum for emerging voices, Storefront explores vital issues in art and architecture with the intent of increasing awareness of and interest in contemporary design.

In 1992, Steven Holl and artist Vito Acconci were commissioned as a collaborative team to renovate the aging facade of the Storefront for Art and Architecture, situated on the corner of a block that marks the intersection of three distinct neighborhoods: Chinatown, Little Italy and SoHo. The gallery itself is a limited, narrow wedge with a triangulated exhibition interior, such that the most dominant structure for the Storefront is the building's long facade.
